A key mission of Visit Finland, which operates as part of Business Finland, is to promote the export of Finnish tourism and create demand among international travelers. Finland as a destination consists primarily of smaller attractions and businesses, and Visit Finland plays a crucial role in supporting the sustainable development and visibility of these enterprises. Today, digital visibility and marketability are central, especially when targeting international travelers.

In addition to its other services, Visit Finland offers the Finnish tourism industry two significant digital services: DataHub and Sustainable Travel Finland (STF). These services support the development of sustainable tourism and the international promotion of Finnish tourism. twoday has been involved in developing these services as a partner of Visit Finland.

"At the core of Visit Finland's strategy is to make Finland the world's most sustainable travel destination, and the STF program plays a central role in achieving this. The strategy also focuses on multi-channel presence, digital visibility, and marketability, and DataHub supports these aspects", says Visit Finland's Digital Development Manager, Annakaisa Ojala. "These services utilize modern technologies that support their maintenance and further development," adds product owner Meea Tuomarmäki, responsible for the technical development of the services.

DataHub enhances the digital visibility of Finland's tourism industry

DataHub is a database and distribution system for the marketing content of tourism products, services and destinations. Businesses can register with the service and add content about their products, which can be utilized by both domestic and international operators across various channels. DataHub enables centralized sharing of business and product information from a single source.

The database already contains over 8,000 product contents, utilized by over 40 different publishing channels. The goal is to increase the number of contents to over 10,000 products, and businesses and regions throughout Finland are encouraged to actively use the service.

DataHub also serves Visit Finland's digital ecosystem, including the visitfinland.com website, which introduces Finland to international travelers, and the Finland Travel PRO, a service for international tour operators.

The Sustainable Travel Finland program supports sustainable development in the tourism sector

For the tourism sector to meet changing demand and secure its future, development must be sustainable. For this purpose, Visit Finland has developed the open and free Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) program, a service aimed at supporting sustainable business development for all tourism companies and destinations.

"Visit Finland aims to make Finland the world's most sustainable travel destination, and the STF program is at the heart of this strategy," Ojala explains. In the program, companies create a plan for making their own business more sustainable. Destinations and companies that complete the entire program and meet the criteria are awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label.

The program is executed in the STF Hub, a digital service where operators verify the steps of the STF path and can apply for the STF label. The STF Hub provides information about sustainable tourism and the tools offered by the STF program.

An essential tool of the STF program, the tourism sector's carbon footprint calculator Hiilikuri, was also moved to the STF Hub. Previously, Hiilikuri operated on its own web address. With the move, the tools offered by the STF programme are now better accessible from a single address..

"The user interface has been designed with a customer-centric approach, and customer experience has been a priority from the beginning of the development work," Tuomarmäki states

Proactive development is key

twoday has been involved in the further development of DataHub for several years, and STF Hub and Hiilikuri have been developed together from the very beginning. The projects were carried out using agile methods, allowing for effective work pacing and good predictability.

"The developers and other team members have had an ambitious and proactive approach throughout the project. They have not only done what was requested but also proactively brought good solution and development ideas. There have been challenges in the project, but a working solution has always been found," Tuomarmäki appreciates.

To date, nearly 500 companies have completed the STF program and received the label, and the number continues to grow. "It has been important for us to develop modern, easily maintainable, and cost-effective software that offers a smooth and consistent customer experience. This has contributed to the increased use of our services," says Ojala.

The collaboration between twoday and Visit Finland has been key to success, and the expertise of both parties has helped to find the best solutions. "A great team spirit and a proactive approach have been the most important factors for success," summarizes Tuomarmäki.
