Driving Change: How Fintraffic Mobile Improves Traffic Safety and Efficiency
Fintraffic
Fintraffic is a state-owned company under the Finnish government that manages traffic across land, sea, and air. It also aims to promote the use of traffic data and support the growth of the entire transport and logistics sector.
We helped Fintraffic develop the Fintraffic Mobile application, which delivers real-time traffic information to road users and rail passengers, enabling them to respond quickly to changing traffic conditions.
Fintraffic’s mission is to provide essential traffic management services for society, public authorities, and businesses, ensuring smooth and reliable operations in both everyday and emergency situations. The company focuses on smart traffic management, digital services for businesses and consumers, and up-to-date traffic information. One example is Fintraffic Mobile, a new app that offers real-time updates on road and rail traffic in Finland, including any disruptions.
We collaborated with Fintraffic on the design and development of Fintraffic Mobile, which won the Best Customer Experience 2024 award.
A Modern App for Safer Roads
The new Fintraffic Mobile app is set to replace the old Traffic Situation app, which needed major technical updates and new features that couldn't easily be added. Instead of upgrading the old app, the solution was to create a brand-new, modern, and user-friendly service from the ground up.
One of Fintraffic's main goals is to improve traffic flow, safety, and environmental impact, and this app helps achieve that. By providing real-time traffic updates and alerts directly to users' phones, it supports safer and smoother travel.
"Being able to directly inform and warn users about bad weather or other hazards will definitely make traffic safer and everyday life smoother," says Antti Haarala, Head of Digital at Fintraffic, highlighting the benefits for both individuals and society.
Keeping Citizens Informed with Two-Way Communication
The goal of the new app was to combine the features of Fintraffic's previous services into a single, easy-to-use mobile app. Now, two of Fintraffic's popular services are available in one place, along with a new Feedback Channel. This feature lets road users report issues they encounter, such as unploughed roads or potholes. The feedback goes directly to the national Transport Customer Service, operated by the Finnish Roads Agency, the ELY centres, and Fintraffic, who then pass it on to contractors.
A key focus of the project was communication. In addition to gathering feedback, the app allows for better updates on things like disruptions, hazardous weather, or other changes on roads and railways. With real-time, location-based notifications, users can adjust their routes to make their journeys safer and smoother, whether before or during travel.
"The app goes wherever people go and uses location data, so the updates are timely and relevant. For example, if an accident happens nearby, the user can get a notification almost immediately," says Haarala.
Main Features of the App
🚗 Road Transport
Speed camera locations across Finland, incident alerts, electric vehicle charging points and gas stations, driving conditions and road warnings, congestion updates, and other road information.
🚆 Train Traffic
Real-time timetables for Finnish railway stations, train route tracking, and live incident updates.
✍️ Feedback Channel
Report issues with road or rail conditions, such as disruptions or hazards, and track the status of submitted feedback.
A Successful Project with More to Come
The project has been a success, according to Fintraffic and user feedback. The app's popularity is growing, with around 10,000 downloads per month, showing strong interest. One reason for this is the reliable data sourced directly from Fintraffic's own systems. "The data is dependable and 'official,' which supports the app's success. It can be seen as a kind of public service," says Haarala.
New features will soon be added to the app. In addition to the feedback function, an "observations" feature will allow users to report issues like traffic jams, roadblocks, or animals on the road — things not necessarily related to road conditions. This will help Fintraffic issue warnings or look into the situation further.
Local road maintenance updates are also coming, such as when roads were last ploughed. For those in remote areas, this information can be crucial for getting to work or other essential travel. Other features are being developed, including predictive and planning tools to help users prepare for their journeys in addition to real-time updates.
Praise for Teamwork
twoday's contributions to the project have been highly appreciated. "The work has been very professional, and twoday has proven to be a reliable partner. Even when tasks have been complex, such as processing traffic data that was new to the developers, we’ve managed well and created a great application", comments Antti Haarala, Head of Digital at Fintraffic.

"The communication with twoday's team has been smooth, and we’ve worked closely together, discussing issues daily. Any problems that came up were addressed promptly. Everyone has been great to work with, and the collaboration has been enjoyable," Haarala adds.
The project involves handling large amounts of data and a technically complex service, yet the implementation has gone smoothly. Even during the early beta phase, there were no major technical issues.
"We’ve built a very functional and high-quality product," Haarala says about the app.
The app is available for free on Android via Google Play and on iOS from the App Store.
